Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions

Do I have to be a CPTN Certified Personal Trainer to be a CPTN Member?

No. CPTN welcomes members from other agencies as well as non-certified individuals and organizations. However, you must be a CPTN-CPT to appear on the Find A Trainer page.

See the Membership Benefits page for details on becoming a Certified Personal Trainer.

Do I need to renew my membership status?

Yes. Non-certified members must renew to access the Members Portal and receive member rates. Expired members can renew using the Membership Renewal Form.

CPTN trainers within 6 months overdue will have membership reinstated once Certification Renewal is approved. If overdue by more than 6 months, contact Education Services for reinstatement options.

Note: Member accounts deactivate on the expiration date. CPTN certifications become invalid after expiration, and trainers cannot claim to be certified.

What is a continuing education credit course?

Continuing education courses are learning experiences taken after completing a degree or diploma to support personal or professional development.

Proof of completion (transcripts, certificates, or attendance letters) is required. Transcript-based petitions must include course outlines.

CPTN awards 1 Continuing Education Credit (CEC) per contact hour, excluding lunch breaks.

Note: Other organizations may use the traditional institutional credit system or Continuing Education Units (CEUs), typically valued from 0 to 1.

What is a CEC Petition?

A CEC Petition is the process of submitting non-approved but related courses for review to determine CEC eligibility.

CPTN does not accept petitions for: workouts, master classes, clinical hours, internships, self-study for exams, lecturing, job-prep courses, fitness books, VHS/CD/DVD training, or courses outside health and fitness.

Can I transfer related CECs completed from other providers?

Yes. You can petition external courses for CPTN CECs using the CEC Petitions Online Form. Review the instructions to ensure all required information is provided.

Proof of completion must be uploaded via the Document Upload page or emailed to education@cptn.com.

Do I need to earn CECs for each CPTN certification?

No. Trainers with multiple CPTN certifications can renew all certifications at the same time. Earned CECs apply to all certifications.

Your renewal dates will align with your CPTN-CPT or most recent certification for simplified renewal.
