CPTN Conference 2012 Session Information

Thursday, May 31, 2012 Preconference Sessions

PC1: Using Research for Decision Making (L)

Dr. Trevor Cottrell, PhD, CSCS

How do you decide which supplement to buy? Which training protocol is best? The information age has increased the volume of information and misinformation flowing through the fitness industry. Research can sometimes help guide you through this information jungle. This workshop has 2 objectives: 1) To provide an overview of Internet search strategies for finding peer-reviewed research articles on a variety of topics. Some web-based researching strategies will be discussed using scenarios that every trainer can relate to. 2) To develop a strategy for analyzing research articles in order to better understand what the research means to practitioners in the field.

Time: 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM / Fee: $99 + HST member; $149 + HST non-member / CECs: CPTN-4, NSCA-0.4, OFC-4

PC2: Reconditioning a Dysfunctional Squat Pattern (L)

Steve Lidstone, BKin, CSCS, CAT(C), NCCP

Fact: In a group of 15-20 athletes from a wide variety of sports, 75% of them are unable to squat without dysfunction or pain. Interested in learning how to correct this problem? This interactive workshop addresses screening, assessment and reconditioning of a dysfunctional squat pattern. In the first hour, participants will learn how to recognize correct and incorrect squatting mechanics via video analysis and practical assessment sessions. In the second hour, participants will then be taught how to screen and determine common pathologies and locations of restrictions/limitations related to squatting. The third hour will be spent correcting a dysfunctional squat using exercise and creating awareness regarding how to create a referral system for treatment.

Time: 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM / Fee: $99 + HST member; $149 + HST non-member / CECs: CPTN-4, NSCA-0.4, OFC-4

PC6: Sandbag Training (WS)

Dr. Trevor Cottrell, PhD, CSCS

Sandbag training is a simple and cost-effective way to implement fitness and athletic performance programming at a relatively low cost to a large group with minimal technical instruction. Their irregular shapes and instability of load offer a unique challenge to full-body or isolation training. Movement tempo can be varied to maximize hypertrophy, metabolic conditioning or power development, and through the varied use of complex muscle movements a full-body workout can be achieved quickly and efficiently. Despite these benefits there are also limitations to sandbag training. This workshop will examine the theory and practice of sandbag training and provide participants with the skills necessary to create their own novel sandbag training routines.

Note: This is an active session. Please wear workout gear.

Time: 1:30 PM to 5:30 PM / Fee: $99 + HST member; $149 + HST non-member / CECs: CPTN-4, NSCA-0.4, OFC-7

In this workshop you will learn the attitude of making the warm up about more than "getting warm", the five factors to guide the content of a general warm up, eight key areas (exercise types) for a general warm up, four different warm up templates for the general warm up, how to periodize a general warm up over a day, a week and several months, and how to create optimal synergy between the general warm up and the training program.
